Style direct et Style indirect (récupéré du Tumblr)

A common mistake that people make in French is when they change their sentence from the direct approach (”he said ‘I love you’”) to the indirect approach (”he said that he loves you”) and they don’t respect the verb conjugation that they should have. Here is how to change from the direct to the indirect.

Present Tense (Ex. Il dit)
All styles stay the same except for the Impératif that changes to the subjonctif or the infinitif (your choice).
  • Examples:

Past Tense (Ex. Il a dit/il disait)
  1. Présent change to imparfait
  2. Imparfait stays the imparfait
  3. Impératif changes to either the subjonctif or infinitif
  4. Futur simple changes to conditionnel présent
  5. Futur antérieur changes to conditionnel passé
  6. Passé composé changes to plus-que-parfait
  7. Plus-que-parfait stays plus-que-parfait
  8. Futur proche changes to imparfait + infinitif
  9. Passé proche changes to imparfait + de + infinitif
  • Examples:
